What was expected out of me? Just ignore everything I see True believer, disobedient Throwing scraps on both sides of the fence Corruption doesn't sit for very long Turned into a cynical kind of song Telling tales everyone agreed Of where and when to leave something buried We'll discover if they want to know The truth unfolded blow by blow Here it is, that's where it's hid What to do the whistle blows Such a brutal story Send it all to the river Light a match before you leave I wrote it down, everything, is it something you'd like to read? Do your worst This is a warning, I'm a whistle blowing Whistle blowing

Oh you're passing on a hill again With your highway friend, regulating You're passing on a hill Is that what you're doing? Because it doesn't make much sense With what you're carrying, the resistance and the drag You're passing on hill, how does it feel? Stacked in the mirror, angrier still Places to go, if they can get off the road Passing on a hill, stubborn, futile Oh you're passing on a hill again Losing patience is that what you're doing? Miscalculated, attenuated, disconnection It's not happening, happening You're passing on hill, how does it feel? Stacked in the mirror, angrier still Places to go, if they can get off the road Passing on a hill, stubborn, futile

Walking the woods again, shadows where you've been Lose some, give one, just to hear a sound Something like DNA passed down in a programmed brain Tendencies meet needs, push against the ground Why you going to cross the street? Just to go and poke the bear With some clippers out as if you're going to shave off its hair What were you thinking? How's it going to all work out? Maybe a bloody mess, dragged and beaten up and down Half expected, self directed, what's predicted When you poke the bear Immolation, put in motion, the reaction When you poke the bear Where's your imagination? Try and entertain yourself Getting attention anyway I guess it comes around Always closer, reaching out to touch the rail Sabotage yourself than wait around just to fail Half expected, self directed, what's predicted When you poke the bear Immolation, put in motion, the reaction When you poke the bear Poke the bear, I think I'm going to poke the bear I think I'm going to poke the bear

You going to bring out the peaches? I probably will Before we start talking about who to kill The future is coming Down a telegraph wire Dip them in tar light them on fire You can see from the thoroughfare Just as well as I can Stay on your side and I'll stay on mine When we share common interest We can cooperate Not far to travel from love into hate and back again Ain't is a shame, the predilections of man Fanning the flames, confusing the same This had to happen, just like it did It gets to crazy when you take off the lid When we share common interest We can cooperate Not far to travel from love into hate and back again Ain't is a shame, the predilections of man Fanning the flames, confusing the same This had to happen, just like it did It gets to crazy when you take off the lid Ain't it a shame

Get Sick 04:02
Drink to much and your gut might rot Act like a chimney and your lungs get shot Fall in a trough, blood gets thick So many ways to make yourself sick Press your luck, such a hit The consumption goes along with it Keep on checking for fleas and for ticks So many ways that you can get sick You get sick, you get sick Hang around for a little bit, until you get sick Walking through the chemical bin Take a bath, dip your skin Take a breath, try to be fit Enough exposure and might just get sick You get sick, you get sick Hang around for a little bit, until you get sick You can get sick, pretty damn quick

You realize I've stolen some time To put off some shame that was the price To bad for you to know it better than some You only live once Failure was always an option you see Wasn't that something you knew about me Surprised I guess if you didn't already Know this part of the truth Trying so hard this impossibility Without remorse, no humility Why don't you just tell me it's all ok I'll trundle on, setting more bombs You only live once, even sociopaths only live once Trying so hard this impossibility Without remorse, no humility Why don't you just tell me it's all ok I'll trundle on, setting more bombs You only live once, even sociopaths only live once You only live once, so I'm number one Wasn't that something you knew about me Failure was always an option you see Wasn't that something you already knew about me You only live once, even sociopaths only live once You only live once

about

I remember doing an exercise in high school English where as a class we ‘defined’ what the word ‘hero’ means. I think we were studying Greek mythology and that study formed the predicate for the discussion. At the time I found the exercise tedious as I had a fairly clear idea (or so I thought) of what this word meant in different contexts, however, upon reflection most of my view was likely indoctrinated based on familiar archetypes expressed in various forms of mass media and societal norms/expectations. What has stuck with me most about the exercise is this: even in a class that was on the surface not especially diverse, as we individually made the case for words to describe what makes a ‘hero’ there was debate on the words chosen and what truly belonged as descriptors (enter tedium). What I am describing is merely an anecdote, but indicative of what one might experience on a given day if you interact with other people, id est the words we use have different meanings for different people, or at the very least are conceptualized differently. There probably is not a universal resonance. Never mind that words are made somewhat superfluous minus context and probably often fail at truly capturing our thoughts. The variance in vocabulary and language across individuals and cultures could very well be indicative of the challenge to express our intent at any given moment.

Lyrically, with this collection of songs, a common thread throughout (minus Ohio! This is a Sequel which is autobiographical and tying a love together with geography as a backdrop) is general social friction. What I have described previously is an attempt at explaining a potential source of this generalized friction: ‘what are you saying?’ or ‘what did you just say?’ or ‘that’s not what I mean.’ or ‘I can’t explain it.’ As human beings we use stories literally, figuratively, metaphorically, symbolically, instructively, etc, to communicate a range of things. A familiar story form has a beginning, a protagonist, an antagonist, motivation(s), setting, an arc, conflict, and finally resolution (this is an abridged listing). Describing events involving people in the world rarely fit this form for the simple reason the resolution part doesn’t often neatly happen. The story continues, and/or never really existed as told, and/or is ignored, and/or is manipulated and distorted to deliver some other message, etc. Source of friction. How else does the form fall short in describing ‘real’ events? Compare and contrast what protagonist and antagonist ‘mean’. Critical to sussing out working definitions is context, perspective, time and place. Reaching a consensus? Come back tomorrow. You may reach a different conclusion. A challenge to say the least. Friction.

This is my 5th release as The Beard Police and was once again recorded in my trusty basement and living room. When I started this project it was going to be a single (Poke the Bear) with a b-side (Ohio! This is a Sequel) then I had more ideas and the whole thing grew to its present incarnation. Gear I used: Telecaster (x 2), Strat, Reverend Double Agent OG, Blueridge BR-180, Squire J-Bass, Fender Deluxe Reverb, Mesa Boogie 1 X 12”, Truetone Jekyll and Hyde, Truetone Clean Boost, Boss DD-3, Xotic AC Booster, Shure SM57, Sennheiser MD421, AKG C214, Studio Projects T3, Universal Audio Apollo Twin, Universal Audio Ox, Midi keyboard, Garageband.
