Names are changed by the ones who win Easier to erase what's been Find the meaning once you bleed Can't take it back when the children see We're going to change your name Assimilate from your knees We'll decide after you kiss the ring You won't forget but nor will we When we change your name say 'ya, that's me' We're going to change your name Change your name, change your name Burn it down everything Artifact make you think you're free Turn your back, a demand Maybe then we'll let you'll stand We gotta change your name, We gotta change your name We gotta change your name Change your name, change your name

Over Again 03:20
It got to be built, must be today, after you're done just go away When you get back, put up a wall, knock it back down whenever we call, call Over again, happens over again, repeating it all over, over again It's in our blood to wander around, now we're tied up, holding us down, down Over again, happens over again, repeating it all over, over again (3x)

Rabbit Hole 03:56
Down here in a rabbit hole deep under the ground Running with blinders on makes it hard to turn around When something is bothering me give that thing a name So convenient when it's time to toss the blame Try and coax me out but it's safer where I am A tunnel I can run back down and easily understand A logic that confuses you, you just can't really see The echoes that bounce around and explain the world to me Down here in a rabbit hole, which way I can go? Probably deeper still Everything that's killing me, am I a martyr made to be? That explains a lot Down here in a rabbit hole, all the paths I know How you going to follow me? Everything that's killing me, so very ineloquently Can I keep you here? Down in the dirt, set to alert Already won, why start when it's done? Down in the dirt, guarding the hurt Already done, another tunnel to run Tunnel to run, tunnel to run

All of this water so green that it's black Don't step into it you might not come back Don't drop the baby he'll sink like a stone There no-one else out here, we're all alone It's over for us, might be all over for us Between the mold and the rust I guess it's all over for us A hole in the levee, we're floating away Into the ocean sometime today Forgot to reshape it, distracted somehow Time for the panic might be right now, might be right now It's over for us, might be all over for us Between the mold and the rust I guess it's all over for us

New World 03:25
Grab that stuff man it's better to hold In the soil now watch it grow Back on your horse we can't let them know About the silver and gold, silver and gold Look at that man he looks kind of sick So does that one it's spreading real quick On to the next we shouldn't let them know About the silver and gold, silver and gold Into the mountain again, down to the stone until it bleeds Picking up everything to send it back home Maybe one day we'll leave, or maybe we'll stay guess we'll see Calling this place where we are the new world, the new world Silver Into the mountain again, down to the stone until it bleeds Picking up everything to send it back home Maybe one day we'll leave, or maybe we'll stay guess we'll see Calling this place where we are the new world, the new world The new world

Know what to do now, (you know what to do) Ain't always easy when you know what to do Know what to do but you probably won't Damned if you do, damned if you don't You're kind of lazy so you'll save the time Maybe trade it for some peace of mind Know what to do so just shut up That's the part that can be so tough Making time for another day Keep on moving makes me want to say Sad but true, not always easy when you know what to do Every morning you know what to do Put on your pants before you put on your shoes When you're early you'll be on time A bottle richer when you drop the dime 90% if you just show up Some times that's enough Using tread on another day Keep on moving makes me want to say Sad but true, not always easy when you know what to do

Send the coal to China, a power plant will use it up Making electricity into thousands of plastic cups Or all that rubber stuff down at the factory Across the ocean to sell at the Dollar Tree, the Dollar Tree There's possibility out on the road When it rains at night you might be dodging toads if you care They want to get to the swamp on the other side They want it so damn bad that they're willing to die Creation myth goes along with it Story's old it must be true Make it fit in creation myth Go to sleep after you do Can to can living off the land Trading metal for a little bit of cash Hand that money over to the holding man You're feeling normal you can do it all again Fascination, it's hard to look away You might miss what it is they have to say About the weather and every other thing It must be real it's right there on the screen Creation myth goes along with it

Salt Lake 04:01
Heard what you said a second ago Still in my head all that I know Shuffling, sleepwalking around Just to keep moving until I lay back down Kind of seems like you're lying to me But I guess I forgot, can't prove that to be Can't prove that to be All my notes fall like rain Into rivers, drift away Into a Great Salt Lake All the blues, the reds and the grays Fade away, fade away I think I really need to investigate But it's hard to do when your memory flakes Recognizing you question yourself A coy smile and a shake and say here let me help I might have some things you can take But remembering them is a hard thing to fake Yesterday all but replaced Now I'm standing here with a blank page A blank page All my notes fall like rain

about

With apologies to the potato, there is perhaps no other fruit or vegetable as universal to cuisine as the tomato in all its varietals. Yet prior to the 16th century a person in Rome, for example, had absolutely no idea such a food even existed. Why? Answer: because all the tomatoes in the world at the time were across the Atlantic Ocean. Even when Italians and other Europeans were aware of tomatoes it took 75-100 years for them to really catch on as a staple there. Coming out of the ‘Dark Ages’ indeed! Now imagine present day Italian cooking minus the tomato and all the mildly acidic, juicy, saucy goodness it adds to so many dishes. Might be hard to fathom for a present day human who pays attention to such things. Tomatoes (as do potatoes and maize (corn)) come from the ‘New World’ described in the histories of Western Civilization (but might actually be better described as the ‘Parallel World’ depending on how one looks at it).

We are born into a world of conditions, but these conditions are not uniform at any particular moment at the individual level along many factors, and conditions change in a macro sense at what could be described as chaotically. Sometimes we just don’t know what we don’t know (like tomatoes are awesome) because something just doesn’t exist in our environment. Think of any discovery or human innovation with no connotation to ‘good’ or ‘bad’: (short list in no particular order or inferred importance) harnessing fire, domestication of the dog, understanding seeds beget plants, preserving food and drink through fermentation, the wheel, written word, dependable water quality, the combustion engine, transmitted voice communications, etc., etc. This knowledge is gained and spread in fits and starts. Sometimes embraced, sometimes resisted, sometimes suppressed, sometimes forgotten, sometimes abandoned to varying degrees, sometimes all at the same time. Sometimes the knowledge isn’t even widely known (how do cell phones work?), but the resultant useful tool is used over and over again with little thought. Sometimes we might not even like the shiny, new thing, but in order to keep pace with the herd we use it just like everyone else seemingly does around us. We are aware, therefore we use, and a thing exists in our consciousness. Histories can give us some insight into what we are experiencing in the present, and while there is most likely truth to the old cliché ‘history repeats itself’, the more likely outcome in terms of the future, with history in mind and barring cataclysm, is there will be some discovery or innovation, again with no connotation to ‘good’ or ‘bad’, that none of us anticipates resulting in a sea change to how people perceive and interact with the world.

The themes of this collection of songs touch back to the notion of perception and perspective. All of the characters I imagine in the lyrics of these songs have a blind spot in terms of how they are able to process the information and experiences they access thru whatever means real or imagined. What and when does someone think of something, and when a thought becomes something more concrete, like an idea, a belief, an action, does the same person have the ability to remain curious to what else might be happening in the world influencing and motivating themselves and others?
